In a decisive move to streamline Nigeria's admission process, the Federal Government has officially fixed 16 years as the minimum age requirement for admission into all tertiary institutions across the country.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the opening session of the 2025 JAMB Policy Meeting held in Abuja. According to the Minister, the age benchmark is final, non-negotiable, and must be strictly adhered to by all institutions and admission seekers.
Dr. Alausa also issued a strong warning to all tertiary institutions: any admission carried out outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) will be considered illegal. He noted that the government will no longer tolerate backdoor admissions or manipulation of entry requirements.
“From now on, no admission will be accepted if it does not go through CAPS. Any violation will attract legal consequences,” the Minister said.
He further cautioned against admission racketeering and unethical practices by heads of institutions, saying that culprits will face severe penalties, including prosecution.
What This Means for Admission Seekers:
You must be at least 16 years old at the time of admission into any university, polytechnic, or college of education in Nigeria.
All admissions must be processed and approved through JAMB CAPS.
Institutions that admit candidates below the age of 16 or bypass CAPS may have those admissions nullified.
Advice from Admission In Progress:
If you're planning to gain admission this year or in the future, ensure that:
You meet the minimum age requirement of 16.
You process your admission through the official JAMB channels.
You avoid any agent or institution promising "shortcut" admissions, as these could lead to cancellation or legal troubles.
